Pain Management

If you’re experiencing chronic (long term) pain, our highly skilled physical medicine doctors can help you get back to the activities you love.

Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic, our team of physical medicine experts are experienced in pain management for many types of conditions. Whether your pain is the result of a long term illness or a sudden injury, our specialists offer a variety of advanced treatments to help you feel better.

What is Physical Medicine?

Physical medicine is a nonsurgical approach to pain management. Physical medicine specialists (called physiatrists) treat chronic pain by focusing on your overall well-being. Some of the treatments used by physiatrists include acupuncture, manipulation (when a doctor uses pressure on a body part), physical therapy, and injections.

Conditions We Treat

Our board-certified physical medicine specialists are highly skilled at treating conditions that affect the nerves, muscles, and bones. We’ll help you improve your strength and mobility after events like surgery, injury, or the diagnosis of an illness.

Conditions we treat include:

About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the technique of inserting thin, steel needles into specific parts of the body to improve health and manage pain. Acupuncture originated in China and has been practiced there and in other Asian countries for over 2,000 years.

Shared Medical Appointments

When you request an appointment to see a physical medicine specialist, you’ll have the option of a shared medical appointment (SMA). We’ll bring six to 15 patients with similar conditions together for group treatment. This reduces wait times and improves your access to specialized care — all within a supportive and relaxed environment.

During an SMA, you and your group will spend 90 minutes with a highly skilled team of physical medicine specialists. Your group appointment will include:

  • Discussing treatment options
  • Explaining test results
  • Medication prescriptions or refills
  • Sharing medication side effects
  • Scheduling tests and procedures
  • Private individual exams
  • Question-and-answer session

Because your privacy is important to us, you and other SMA patients will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement that asks you not to share personal information.

Patients are satisfied with our innovative shared medical appointment program. In fact, over 80 percent of SMA patients say they would participate in a group appointment again.
