Award-Winning Care

Studies show that patients treated at hospitals who receive the award have a 65 percent lower risk of complications in the hospital than if they were treated at a hospital that didn’t receive the award.

Other joint care awards Rutland Regional has received include:

  • Joint Replacement Excellence Award for 4 years in a row (2019-2022)
  • Five-Star recipient for Total Knee Replacement for 12 years in a row (2011-2022)
  • Five-Star recipient for Total Hip Replacement for 4 years in a row (2019-2022)

What Is Joint Replacement Surgery?

Joint replacement surgery (also called arthroplasty) is a surgical process where a doctor removes a damaged joint and replaces it with an artificial joint (prosthesis). The new joint is made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. It will move and look similar to your old joint.

In some cases, a doctor may only need to replace part of the joint. This is called a partial joint replacement.

Joints that surgeons can replace include the:

  • Toes and ankles
  • Elbows and wrists
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Shoulders

At Rutland Regional, we offer a variety of joint replacement procedures. The most common joint replacements are the hip and knee.

When To Consider a Joint Replacement

Ask your doctor about a joint replacement if:

  • You’re having pain and stiffness for six months or more
  • Your pain is impacting your daily activities (like walking, climbing the stairs, or standing up) or recreational activities you enjoy
  • X-rays show that arthritis or other bone conditions are damaging your joints
  • You have tried other treatments like medication or injections, but they’re not helping

Diagnosis

To find out whether a joint replacement is right for you, the specialists at Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic will consider:

  • Nonsurgical treatments you’ve tried for your joint paint
  • Whether your pain may have been caused by a chronic (long term) condition like arthritis
  • Whether there have been injuries or trauma to the joint
  • How much pain you’re having in your daily activities
  • How old you are and what your activity level is

If you are getting a joint replacement, we’ll guide you through every step of the way. That includes:
