Diagnosising Foot and Ankle Conditions

Your feet and ankles are a complicated web of bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. If you’re experiencing foot or ankle pain, our experts will give you a thorough examination to find out the cause.

Your doctor may ask you questions about:

  • When and where your foot and ankle pain is happening
  • Your medical history and any injuries you’ve had
  • Your lifestyle (like what sports you play or what you do for work)

Your doctor may also order diagnostic imaging tests to create a picture of your foot or ankle. These may include:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • X-Ray
  • Ultrasound

Arthroscopy of the Ankle

If your foot or ankle has serious damage, your doctor may recommend ankle replacement surgery. Your foot and ankle surgeon will use a minimally invasive technique called arthroscopic surgery . During arthroscopic surgery, your surgeon will insert a tiny camera on a thin tube into a small incision in your foot or ankle. This camera will send a video of the surgery to a television screen that will help your surgeon guide the instruments.

Treatment for Foot and Ankle Pain

Once doctors find out the cause of your foot or ankle problem, the experts at Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic will help you develop a treatment plan. Depending on the cause of your pain, your treatment could include non-surgical care, surgery, or an ankle replacement.

Nonsurgical Care

If you need nonsurgical treatment for your foot or ankle pain, you may receive:

  • Physical therapy to increase strength and mobility
  • Occupational therapy exercises to help you get back to your daily activities
  • Taping, casting, or splinting to keep your foot in the correct position so it can heal
  • Custom supports (orthotics), such as foot pads, shoe inserts, and ankle braces to help support your foot or ankle

Injections or medications to reduce pain and swelling

Surgical Care

If your condition is serious or if nonsurgical treatments don’t help, foot or ankle surgery may be the best option. Rutland Regional’s experienced foot and ankle surgeons have credentials from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and are skilled at the most up-to-date surgical techniques.

Types of foot and ankle surgeries we offer include:

  • Fracture repair, to repair fractures with screws, metal plates, and rods
