Managing diabetes is challenging, but you don’t have to do it alone. Certified by the American Diabetes Association, our Diabetes & Endocrinology Center provides advanced, comprehensive diabetes care in a warm and supportive environment.
We take a team approach, working with you and your primary care physician to treat your diabetes and prevent serious complications associated with your condition. We also encourage you to take an active role in your care by participating in our self-management and support programs.
Diabetes is a lifelong disease that affects your body’s ability to produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that helps your body convert food to glucose (sugar). Because glucose is the main source of fuel for your body, diabetes must be carefully managed to ensure that you feel well and remain healthy.
Our specialists provide the latest treatments and therapies for all three types of diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes, sometimes called “juvenile diabetes,” is an autoimmune disease that typically develops early in life and causes the body’s immune system to destroy insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Because Type 1 diabetes causes your body to produce little or no insulin, you must take insulin every day.
Type 2 diabetes is caused by your body’s inability to produce enough insulin and/or use it properly. Mild cases of Type 2 diabetes can sometimes be controlled with dietary changes, exercise and weight loss; however, more severe cases typically must be managed with oral medications or insulin.
Gestational diabetes occurs in pregnant women who have not been previously diagnosed with diabetes. It can sometimes be controlled with dietary changes and exercise, but may require insulin therapy. Although it usually disappears after delivery, women with gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
This is a routine measurement of your blood glucose level. We also call it your "blood sugar" level. It changes throughout the day. Monitoring it is an important part of diabetes management.
If your child has diabetes, our staff will provide your family with specialized care that addresses the unique needs of your child or teen. We take an age-appropriate approach to teaching children and teens about self-care and medication management and help them establish positive lifelong habits to manage their condition. We also educate family members, schools and other caregivers on how to provide diabetes care.
In addition to providing the region’s most advanced treatment for diabetes and endocrine conditions, our specialists offer extensive support services to help you manage your condition, including:
At the Rutland Diabetes & Endocrinology Center, our specialized staff’s number one priority is to provide patients and the community with the best medical treatment, guidance, support and resources available for diabetes and endocrine care. Our diabetes and endocrinology team consists of board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners, diabetes educators, and nutritionists, all of whom are committed to delivering comprehensive, compassionate care. We provide the support you need to manage your condition and live a healthy life.
The team works in collaboration with your primary care physician to develop and manage a personalized treatment plan based on your individual needs. Your team may include:
An endocrinologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect your hormone producing glands. An endocrinologist treats many complex conditions by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in your system.
Our certified nurse practitioners are also available for ongoing and preventive care for pediatric and adult patients with diabetes and work in collaboration with our endocrinologists.
Certified by the American Diabetes Association, our diabetes nurse educators meet one-on-one with patients to teach self management skills. They also instruct patients in group classes. Our diabetes nurse educators are specially trained and certified in all aspects of diabetes education.
Our registered dietitians and nutritionists will meet with you to evaluate your nutritional needs, develop a nutritional care plan and instruct you and your family on how to make the proper food choices to improve your health and manage or reduce your disease symptoms. Our registered dietitians are also certified by the ADA and are specially educated and certified in all aspects of diabetes education.
People with prediabetes have higher-than-normal blood glucose levels that aren't high enough to be called diabetes. Prediabetes is a common health condition, especially among overweight adults. Unfortunately, most people who have prediabetes are not aware they have the condition.
If you have diabetes or another endocrine condition, we can help. Learn how easy it is to become a patient. If you are at risk for diabetes, we encourage you to attend one of our free Diabetes Prevention classes.
If you’re interested in seeking treatment at the Rutland Diabetes & Endocrinology Center, you will need a referral from your physician or nurse practitioner. This ensures that you, your provider and our specialists are collaborating for your health and treatment right from the start. Please call your provider's office to learn which forms and information are required for referral within your insurance plan.
Most insurance companies cover the cost to diagnose and treat diabetes and endocrine disorders. Many also pay for all or a portion of diabetes education services. Please check with your insurance provider to learn about your coverage and to find out about the copayments and referral requirements for your particular medical situation. Our staff is familiar with the requirements of many insurance companies and can help with your insurance coverage questions.
