Types of Cancer

Find comprehensive, board-certified treatment for most adult cancers.

Cancer is not one disease – it’s a group of diseases that start in an organ or tissue of the body when cells grow and multiply in the body when they shouldn’t. Those abnormal cells can form tumors (lumps of tissue). When those lumps are cancerous, they spread to healthy tissue and other parts of the body and cause damage or blockages.

Rutland Regional’s expert oncology team diagnoses and treats most adult cancers, providing the region’s most advanced cancer treatment.

Main Types of Cancer

The two main categories of cancer are:

Blood Cancers (Hematologic)

Cancer that grows in the blood cells is called hematologic cancer. Blood cancers include leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.

Blood cancers usually start where blood is produced — in the bone marrow. When abnormal cells develop, they stop your blood from working the way it should. Blood cancer makes it hard for the body to fight infections and stop bleeding.

Solid Tumor Cancers (Cancers of the Organs or Tissues)

There are many different types of solid tumor cancers — cancers that grow in bones, muscles, or organs.

The most common types of cancer are solid tumor cancers. The most common is breast cancer, followed by prostate cancer and lung cancer.

Lung Cancer

This is an abnormal growth of lung tissue cells. It can affect one or both of your lungs. In the United States, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men and women.
