What to Expect During Radiation Therapy

We’re with you every step of the way, from personalized treatment planning through follow-up care.

At the Foley Cancer Center, you’ll receive comprehensive cancer treatment and support. If radiation therapy is part of your care plan, you’ll work with a specialized team including radiation therapists, radiation oncologists, radiation oncology nurses, and support staff. Learn what to expect, from planning through follow-up care.

Getting Started

You’ll start with a consultation between you, your radiation oncologist, and others from your cancer care team including your supportive friends or family members if you wish.

Your radiation oncologist will start by meeting with you to perform a physical exam, review your medical history, and discuss your radiation treatment options and side effects. After that, we’ll create your radiation treatment plan.

Radiation Therapy

This uses radiation to kill cancer cells. It can shrink tumors. There are several types of radiation therapy. Let's learn about the main ones.

Simulation

At your first radiation therapy appointment, we’ll map the exact treatment area. We’ll use a CT scan to pinpoint the area for radiation, and mark that area with ink. You’ll also get instructions for preventing common radiation side effects, including skin problems.

Your Treatment Schedule

Your treatment schedule and number of treatments depends on your diagnosis. Radiation therapy can last from just a few days to several weeks. You can expect to come in for treatment at the same time each day, and your appointment will take about 30 minutes.

During Treatment

  • During treatment, you’ll lie down in a specific position based on your simulation and treatment plan.
  • There will be a machine (called a linear accelerator) that makes a buzzing sound and may move around your body.
  • Radiation therapy doesn’t hurt, but you should tell your care team if you feel uncomfortable.

Follow-Up

After your last treatment, you’ll visit with your radiation oncologist. During this visit, you’ll discuss the plan for follow-up appointments and regular check-ups. We’ll set up appointments for you before you leave.
