About Me

Dr. Kathryn (Kat) McElheny has joined the award-winning team at the Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic bringing expertise in sports medicine for adults and children. Dr. McElheny is board-certified in Pediatrics and Sports Medicine and specializes in non-operative musculoskeletal care.

Dr. McElheny received a BS from Emory University and her MD from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. She completed her pediatric residency at Weill Cornell New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City where she was Chief Resident. Dr. McElheny went on to complete her primary care sports medicine fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City where she remained on faculty for several years thereafter as an attending physician prior to moving to Vermont. As part of her fellowship experience, she was afforded the opportunity to spend one month at the Killington Medical Clinic with Dr. Matt Gammons, and the dream to someday practice sports medicine in Vermont was set into motion. Dr. McElheny relocated from NYC to southern Vermont in 2024 to be near her husband and their respective families.

In addition to having authored numerous sports medicine-related articles, papers, and presentations, Dr. McElheny previously served the role of Head Team Physician for the New York Mets baseball team where she offered medical support and oversight for 7 seasons. Her research has had a strong focus on injury prevention in baseball athletes given this prior role. She also previously served as Fellow Team Physician for the New York Football Giants and Assistant Team Physician for Rugby United New York.

Dr. McElheny loves spending time outdoors with her family and enjoys hiking, skiing, fishing, gardening, and all of the wonderful things that make Vermont such a special place to live. She will be working primarily at the East Dorset Medical Campus.

I strive for all patients to feel like they have been heard, prioritized, and given a plan of action when they leave the office, and hope to always convey how much I genuinely care and enjoy learning from their collective wisdom.
